What is glycerin?
Glycerin is a plant-derived liquid that is clear and syrupy and naturally sweet and gentle. Though glycerin has a sweet and syrupy taste, it is technically through a chemistry designation considered an alcohol. However, while it is classified as a “sugar alcohol” in chemistry, it is not the same as ethanol (drinking alcohol). This product contains no ethanol alcohol, making it a safe, alcohol-free option for those who wish to avoid it and making it a great option for children. And as a bonus, it is not metabolized by the body like sugar, so it will not spike blood sugar levels.
What are glycerites?
Herbal extracts made with glycerin are called glycerites. Herbal glycerites are liquid extracts of herbs made with vegetable glycerin instead of ethanol alcohol. Glycerin draws out and preserves the beneficial compounds of herbs. Because they are alcohol-free, glycerites are a gentle alternative to traditional tinctures and are often preferred by children, pets and adults who wish to avoid ethanol alcohol.
How long do herbal extracts take to work?
The onset of effects varies depending on the herb and individual factors. Some herbs may provide immediate benefits, while others require consistent use over weeks to notice. While glycerites work a bit differently than ethanol alcohol tinctures, glycerites are still absorbed fairly quickly under the tongue or in the mouth. You can expect them to take effect within 15-45 minutes if the herb itself is fast-acting (like calming, digestive or stimulating herbs). For adaptagens and nourishing herbs, it is less about immediate effects and more about consistent daily use over 2-6 weeks before you notice bigger changes. Glycerites are often chosen because they are alcohol-free and gentler - they may be slightly slower in onset compared to alcohol tinctures, but that does not make them less effective.
How should I store herbal extracts?
Store in a cool, dark place - like a cupboard, pantry or refrigerator. Avoid storing near heat sources (stove, heater) or in direct sunlight, as heat can accelerate spoilage. Refrigeration is optional for short-term use, but recommneded if you live in a hot climate. Refrigeration can extend shelf life and maintain freshness. Shelf-life is typically 1-2 years if stored properly in dark, cool conditions as our glycerites are made with dried herbs. Proper storage helps maintain their potency and extends shelf life.
Are there any adverse effects due to taking herbal extracts?
While generally safe, some individuals may experience sensitivity reactions or digestive discomfort. Each herb has its own potential side effect and some herbs may interact with prescription medication. Some herbs are unsafe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Always check specific herbs before use. Taking more than the recommended dose does not usually make it work faster, but can increase the risk of side effects. Safety tips: start with small doses to gauge tolerance and consult with your healthcare professional before starting any new herbal regimen.
Why is the consistency of my salve or balm soft or melting?
Depending on the climate where you live, your salve or balm may arrive with a texture ranging anywhere from a soft ointment-like consistency to a firmer one. Because these salves or balms contain beeswax, coconut oil, or a combination of the two, the softness of the products will naturally vary with seasonal and regional temperatures. Exposure to heat may cause softening or melting. For best results, store in a cool, dark place, avoid leaving your product in direct sunlight or in a hot car. If softening or melting occurs, simply place the salve or balm in the refrigerator until it returns to its intended consistency.
